Ethical Breeding- Part 2: Dec. 06, 2021

So- our first step, now that we've decided we'd like to breed Phoebe (aka Feebs, Fleebs) is to take her 65km to see the breeding specialist vet. We have an excellent discussion. She performs the Patellar Luxation examination, for which she will be sending the results to OFA. We also get Feebs micro-chipped, and discuss other required/ optional OFA tests (Eye exam, PRA, Autoimmune Thyroiditis, congenital deafness. We book our eye exam with the provincial Animal Eye Clinic. We also decide to do DNA testing for the following:

  • Chondrodystrophy (CDDY and IVDD Risk) with or without Chondrodysplasia (CDPA)

  • M Locus (Merle)

  • Miniature Smooth Dachshund Essential Panel

  • Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis 2

  • Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis 1

  • Progressive retinal atrophy, Cone-rod dystrophy 4

  • Osteogenesis imperfecta (Dachshund type)

  • Progressive retinal atrophy, Cone-rod dystrophy

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (Giant Schnauzer Type)

The Vet also issues us a report card on our girl which includes the words "Physical exam and temperament very good". Given that she's been raised during the pandemic with very limited access to other people/ animals, we're very happy with her personality development. Also- she kicks our Shepherd's ass every day, so I never doubted her confidence.

Oh- the vet also knows of a thoroughly tested male that has been throwing great puppies. A nice bonus.

Next up- eye exam.
