Ethical Breeding- Part 1: Dec 04, 2021

We want to be responsible and ethical breeders.

We have a long history with dogs... 14 German Shepherds, 3 Miniature Dachshunds, A JRT, a Border Collie, a lab/ husky cross over the past 40 years. I've been a professional trainer, and have had my own column in the local paper. The one thing we have never done is breed- not that we didn't want to. There was always something just not quite perfect about our dogs that, to us, precluded us from breeding them. As an example- our current female GSD is an absolutely tremendous dog- everything anyone could ever want from a Shepherd; unfortunately, she has a skin condition that I would not wish to pass on.

Now, for the first time, we have a dog (miniature Dachshund) that I believe warrants being bred. Although unregistered (I personally despise the CKC- but that's another discussion), she has good conformation- which is nice. Much, MUCH more importantly, she is in excellent health, and her temperament is fabulous.

She has just finished her 2nd heat, so we're going to breed her, likely in April/May. As this will be our first attempt, and we want to do it right. Happily, we have an EXCELLENT local vet who specializes in breeding.

I'm going to post periodically on how this all unfolds. I may well be the only person interested- but that's okay. It'll be my own journal.

The Arrival- Part 2 So we FINALLY have our first puppy on the ground. My idea for names (Green, Pink, Blue, etc.) has been vetoed by both...
